A burned tree at Limestone and Whiting
Limestone Canyon and Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park remains closed due to significant damage from the Santiago Fire, which started Oct. 21, 2007. Roughly 90% of the park burned in the massive arson blaze.

Please note, however, that the Santiago Equestrian Center inside Limestone Canyon and Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park has reopened despite the rest of the park’s continued closure.

OC Parks hopes to open the park in phases, beginning sometime this summer. But for now, the park needs time to heal so wildlife can return to its habitat. OC Parks needs time to make the park safe for the public. The rainy season brought major erosion damage to many of the trails. Park staff is working hard to reopen the park as soon as possible.

Fire damage to the park includes:
-4,000 acres of land burned
-Hundreds of mature oak and sycamore trees burned
-12 kiosks burned
-Two bridges destroyed, three damaged
-More 200 trail signs burned
-11/2 Miles of barbed-wire fencing burned
-100 linear feet of split-rail fencing burned

Work that remains to be done:
-Orange County Fire Authority grading of more than 10 miles of fire roads
-Replacing trail signs
-Replacing 75 water bars and trail steps
-Installing 100 feet of split-rail fencing
-Clearing and regarding 10 miles of single-track trails
-Removing non-native vegetation

Please continue to respect the park closure and give the land time to heal.

Check back for further information and updates, including upcoming volunteer opportunities.
