Gear up for this amazing star gazing night as we capture this summer’s meteor shower! Our evening will begin with a fun interactive intergalactic activity that will help us understand our solar system. We will then stretch out under the stars to capture one of this season’s spectacular outer galactic shows!

We will view the different stars and constellations, and tell stories of astronomy folklore as we watch for meteors crossing the night sky.

This program does not include hiking.

Be prepared to experience the beauty and wonder of Weir Canyon, part of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space, steeped in history and lore, on this morning equestrian ride. The ride will travel through Weir Canyon, where the trail weaves its way through a beautiful oak woodland inhabited by deer, coyotes, bobcats and many different birds. You will travel the route of the Butterfield Stage and see a monument dedicated to the Mexican ox cart drivers. If time permits, we will climb to the Two Tower vista point to look at distant views. This ride travels on wide trails with several easy to moderate climbs. Equestrians who have trail riding experience and their own fit and able horse are welcome. You will need to transport your horse to the staging area. Owners of unshod horses, please note that footing will include areas of gravel and distances over asphalt pavement. Please bring water on the ride.

It’s easy to think many of the birds we see and hear look and act the same. But do they? Bring your binoculars and join us on a slow to medium paced walk in OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space as we search for resident and visiting birds of the local coastal sage scrub, oak woodland, riparian and grassland habitats. We will discuss the diverse features of the birds we observe and how they match the season, their habitat and lifestyle. We will travel mostly on ranch roads, usually without shade. Beginners to advanced bird enthusiasts are welcome. Please wear sturdy shoes suitable for hiking and bring water, along with sun protection such as a hat and sunscreen. Bring a small birding field guide if you have one. A few binoculars will be available to borrow.

Come start your week on our Super Treks in the Landmarks and join us as we explore Weir Canyon, part of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. We will hike up over Rifle Range and continue to the Overlook Trail where we will be rewarded with sweeping views of the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks and more distant views of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Los Angeles Basin and Cleveland National Forest. On our way back we will hike through a beautiful oak woodland. Please wear hiking shoes/boots and bring water, a trail snack, sunscreen, hat and any other necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail. Participants must be able to hike 9+ miles with an accumulated elevation gain of 1,800 feet at an average moving rate of 3 mph.

Enjoy the evening night sky lit up by the cascading flashes of meteors! The Perseids Meteor Shower is an annual event in the middle of August, producing nearly 100 meteors an hour. This year will be closer to a half moon, so with a quick eye, you may catch glimpses of a flash of light streaking across the sky. You’ll hear astronomy folklore, search for different constellations and discover nocturnal critters that call the canyon home. Bring your own blankets and chairs to enjoy the nighttime show.

Come enjoy and learn about the bounty of the local flora and fauna. We will talk about how the animals and early settlers of the area survived and thrived with what nature has to offer. We will discuss how over-grazing, weather and seasonal patterns affected the daily availability of food in times when there were no grocery or convenience stores.  Buckwheat graham crackers, prickly pear jam and lemonade berry drink are a few of the tempting treats that we will taste test. After a few snacks, we will take a short stroll along Baker Canyon and take in all the bounty of nature.

Join us on this moderate-paced hike over the ridge and the through beautiful Limestone Canyon Nature Preserve, part of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. We will enjoy short breaks at the East and West Sinks viewing platforms before hiking back through the canyon. We will enjoy a view of wonderful vistas in addition to spectacular views of The Sinks. This hike involves hiking on both double and single track trails with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet.

Please come prepared with a sturdy day pack, water, snacks, closed-toe hiking shoes or boots, sunscreen, first aid and all other supplies to keep you safe and healthy on the trail on this half-day hike in the wilderness area. Under-prepared hikers may be denied access to the event.

You will enjoy a gorgeous sunset with panoramic views of Orange County while hiking in OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space on the paved Hicks Haul Road. This hike travels 6 miles out and back crossing over Loma Ridge. This is the perfect activity for you to get your workout in and view the sunset. The hike is conducted at an average pace of 3 mph, but you may travel a bit faster or slower, at a walk, run or jog depending on your comfort level. Because of the paved surface of the road, you may wear regular running or walking shoes. Trail shoes are fine, but not required. Please bring adequate water.

Come search for the signs and tracks that animals leave behind in OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. Mule deer, bobcats, coyotes and even mountain lions call this hidden canyon home. Gain the basic tracking techniques as we search for evidence such as tracks, fur, bones, homes and even scat. You never know what you may find! Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you do not mind getting a little dusty. This program is focused on older children and adults.
