Open Space Invaders: Invasive Plant Removal at Silverado

Non-native and invasive plant species are invading our native habitat and open spaces. They aggressively compete with our native plants for resources and rapidly spread once established. Monitoring, management and removal of these plant species is an important aspect of land management and habitat restoration.

Help us manage populations of invasive plants and remove them from the habitat. No previous experience is necessary, just a desire to work outside and get dirty! Snake chaps, gloves and tools will be provided but feel free to bring your own if you have them. Please wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, closed-toe shoes and sun protection. Note: This is a wilderness area with natural hazards. Snakes, including rattlesnakes, are occasionally seen here.

Please note that you will be asked to adhere to the following measures in order to participate:

  • Be registered in advance, no walk-up registration is permitted.
  • Arrive with all necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail, including water, proper attire, and closed-toe footwear, first aid, health needs etc.

Demonstration Garden Maintenance: Native Seed Farm

Visitors to Irvine Ranch Conservancy’s Native Seed Farm are first greeted by our Demonstration Garden, providing inspiration for regionally suitable plant gardens. Our garden hosts a variety of native plant species which support a healthy local ecosystem!

Volunteers are invited to help at our monthly Garden Maintenance Day! Our tasks each day are to be determined, but we’ll be tackling whatever jobs are a top priority to keep our Garden teeming with native plant life. Weeding, clearing, cutting, digging, watering - whatever it takes! Labor-intensive activities include bending, stooping, crouching, squatting, standing, reaching, pulling, grabbing and pushing for long periods of time.

Just like all settings on the Landmarks, please always be aware of your surroundings. There may be unseen and hidden dangers in the area, as well as wildlife crossing through finding refuge. Please be sure to follow all instructions provided to you from your lead during this activity and follow standard trail protocols, including remaining in areas that are designated for your use only.

Nighttime Bugs: Augustine Staging Area in Limestone Canyon

Join us for this evening program as we explore biodiversity at the local level with that most diverse group of organisms: insects! Taking advantage of the fact that UV light is highly visible to most insects, we will attract them by using black-lights (low energy/low frequency UV lights). We will then examine them up close and record the different types and their numbers. Don’t forget your camera and help us document the creatures that are normally buzzing around but are not highly visible.
