The OC Parks Jr. Ranger Program encourages park guests to explore the outdoor world within OC Parks by developing a sense of belonging, becoming a part of nature and feeling empowered to be stewards of Orange County’s natural and cultural resources. 

Participants will explore Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, complete activities and take the OC Parks Jr. Ranger Oath to earn a unique Jr. Ranger badge.

This program is designed for ages 7 to 12, but all are welcome. 

Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the program. Sunscreen, sturdy footwear and water are recommended

The program is free and parking is $3 per vehicle. Inclement weather will cancel the program.

Purple Sage

Bird Walk at Mile Square

Mile Square Regional Park has some of the highest bird diversity in Orange County and this gentle paced walk led by highly trained OC Parks volunteers will help bird watchers of all experience levels discover what the park has to offer. All are welcome and binoculars will be available.

Participants should be prepared to walk on paved and dirt trails for up to 2 miles. Closed-toe shoes, water and sun protection are recommended.

The program will begin in parking lot H. 

Minors 16 and younger must be accompanied by a guardian.

Mile Square Story Time

OC Parks invites you to story time at Mile Square Regional Park! Join us as we read nature-themed stories, take a short walk and enjoy a hands-on activity.

Please bring picnic blankets, pillows, chairs, sun protection, water and anything you need to be comfortable. We will meet at Freedom Hall adjacent to parking lot G.

Nature Immersion Meditation

Mindfulness is the practice of being present and aware in the moment. It has been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood and promote overall well-being. Come cultivate mindfulness in nature during this guided meditation session designed to engage your senses and relax your busy mind. 

Closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing are recommended. A yoga mat or portable chair is suggested, along with sun protection and water. Staff will also have extra tarps and pads available.

This program is recommended for ages 10 and older. Minors must be accompanied by a guardian.

Weekly Nature Area Cleanup

Join OC Parks staff and volunteers in enhancing the nature area habitat for local wildlife. Activities may include invasive plant removal, planting natives, watering, removing trash and Butterfly Garden maintenance.

No experience necessary and all tools will be provided. Please bring a hat, sunscreen, snacks and water. Closed-toe shoes and a long sleeve shirt are recommended. Please arrive on time, as work will begin promptly at 9 a.m.

This activity occurs each week with limited space available. Advance registration is required. Learn more and register here.

Nature Area

CANCELED: Lunar Eclipse Viewing Party

*This program has been canceled due to projected significant cloud cover.*

Join us at the Caspers Wilderness Park Nature Center to view the total lunar eclipse! 

A total lunar eclipse happens when the Earth passes directly between the sun and moon, completely blocking the face of the moon. The result is a spectacular red colored moon.

Bring lawn chairs, blankets and anything else you might need to enjoy the show. Wearing layers is recommended. 

Knowledgeable volunteers will be on-site with telescopes available for viewing the eclipse.

Parking will be available in the San Juan Meadow group area and guests will need to walk up the hill to the viewing area at the Nature Center. ADA parking will be available.

Lunar Eclipse

Food Preservation Demonstration - Rhubarb BBQ Sauce

Have you ever wanted to learn about preserving and canning your own food? Join OC Parks and The Master Food Preservers of Orange County at George Key Ranch Historic Park for a food preservation demonstration on Saturday, March 22.

While commonly used jams, jellies and pies, rhubarb is a versatile vegetable and can be used to make a tangy BBQ sauce that will complement your spring grilled meats and vegetables. Participants will have the opportunity to learn what materials are required, the step-by-step process and get some tips from the experts.

Program and parking are free, but reservations are required due to limited parking onsite.
