"Yiking" Red Rock Wilderness

Enjoy a 3+ mile hike and gentle yoga practice in beautiful Red Rock Wilderness Area. The hike will traverse through part of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space, with an elevation gain of approximately 500 feet, and will be a nice warmup for a gentle morning yoga flow under a shaded canopy of trees. Please bring water, a yoga mat and large beach towel. Mats will not be provided; mats will remain in your car while hiking. Closed-toe shoes, water, hats and sunscreen recommended for the hike, as well as sandals to change into after yoga.

  • Be registered in advance, no walk-up registration is permitted.
  • Arrive with all necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail, including water, proper attire, and closed-toe footwear, first aid, additional items needed to address health needs, etc.

OC Public Library and IRC Nature Story Time Series: Native Plants and Animals on the Irvine Ranch Landmarks

Join us for a nature story time experience for kids and families!

This collaboration between OC Public Libraries and Irvine Ranch Conservancy is an exciting nature experience for the community to learn more about the natural environment surrounding Orange County.

The program includes reading storybooks, crafts, and other activities.

The Nature Story Time Series is about native plants and animals on the Irvine Ranch Landmarks. During this session, we will explore the local native flowers found in the Irvine Ranch Open Space in Orange County.

The program is for all ages but is recommended for children ages 3-9 for related crafts and nature content.

The book reading portion of the program will be conducted by the Rancho Santa Margarita Library.

Thursday Morning Trek in the Red Rock Wilderness

Take in stunning views of the surrounding hillsides and hike atop the iconic red rocks at the newly opened Red Rock Wilderness, part of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space.

This morning hike will guide visitors through beautiful hills and valleys to the top of the infamous red rocks and past a model airplane field. Spectacular views of Irvine Lake and the Irvine Ranch Open Space will be enjoyed along the way.

Participants must be able to hike 7.5 miles with an elevation gain of 1,100 feet at an average moving rate of 3 mph.

Please note that you will be asked to adhere to the following measures in order to participate:

  • Be registered in advance, no walk-up registration is permitted.
  • Arrive with all necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail, including water, proper attire, and closed-toe footwear, first aid, additional items needed to address health needs, etc.
  • Restrooms will be available, but facilities will not be sanitized for each individual.

Red Rock Wilderness

After Work Cardio Hike in Saddleback Wilderness

Join us for a fast-paced introduction to cardio hiking in the Saddleback Wilderness, part of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. Along the way, we’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Orange County and possible wildlife sightings. This is a 3.5-mile cardio hike, completed in less than 1.5 hours and includes 350+ feet of elevation gain. This hike is for physically fit hikers who enjoy the challenge of a faster-paced outdoor experience. There are no scheduled breaks and the average 3.5 mph pace can be difficult in the wilderness setting. Please bring a minimum 32 oz. of water. Come prepared with a pack, sturdy closed-toed hiking shoes or boots, sunscreen, first aid and all other supplies to keep you safe and healthy on the trail. Each participant must carry his or her own pack and water. Under-prepared participants may be denied access to this activity.

Animal Signs and Tracks in Agua Chinon

Come search for evidence that animals leave behind in OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. Mule deer, bobcats, coyotes and even mountain lions call this hidden canyon home. Gain the basic tracking techniques as we search for evidence such as tracks, fur, bones, homes and even scat. You never know what you may find! Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you do not mind getting a little dusty. This program is focused on older children and adults.

Early Morning Hike: Gypsum Canyon Wilderness

Come explore the newly opened Gypsum Canyon Wilderness, the northernmost portion of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. This scenic hike involves steep climbs and descents on several singletrack trails and is done at an average moving pace of 3 mph. The rewards are many: panoramic views of Fremont and Weir Canyon Nature Preserves and beyond, possible wildlife sightings, interesting rock formations and beautiful wildflowers in season.

Please come prepared with a sturdy day pack, water, snacks, closed-toe hiking shoes or boots, sunscreen, first aid and all other supplies to keep you safe and healthy on the trail. All participants must carry their own day pack and water and be comfortable hiking an average moving pace of 3 mph. Underprepared participants may be denied access to this activity.

Celebrate Cultures in Nature: Mid-Autumn Festival

This month we will focus on a Chinese celebration called Mid-Autumn Festival. This fun night of celebration in the middle of autumn includes lanterns, lion dances and moon cakes. Come and enjoy an evening hike in Round Canyon.

Discover unique historical tales about the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks as we celebrate different cultures together! Each month, a different culture and celebration will be highlighted, usually with the program presented in multiple languages which allows everyone to fully enjoy the beauty of the land.

Limestone Canyon Night Ride

Join us for an evening mountain bike ride through Limestone Canyon, part of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. Previous experience is required; this should not be your first night ride. Bring adequate lights, a jacket, plenty of water, spare tubes, tools and all other equipment to be self-sufficient on the trails. We will ride approximately 11 miles, with 1,500 feet of climbing along singletrack trails and ranch roads. Hopefully we will see some of our local nocturnal critters.

Enjoy Nature's Story, Vistas, and Special Places - Intro Hike in Red Rock Wilderness

Join us on a slow-paced hike along the backcountry ridges and valleys of Red Rock Wilderness, part of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. We’ll travel mostly on rough old ranch roads passing by woodlands of majestic oak trees and expanses of coastal sage scrub. Total round trip distance is 6 miles with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet at an average moving rate of 2.0-2.5 mph. Some of the hills are strenuous and we will take breaks as needed. Participants should be in good hiking condition and have previously completed a similar distance hike. Please come prepared with a backpack, plenty of water (at least 1 liter), snacks, sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes or boots, sunscreen, first aid kit, and all other supplies to keep you safe and healthy on the trail. Each hiker must carry their own water and supplies. Under-prepared participants may be denied access to the event.

Red Rock Wilderness

Slow-paced Mountain Bike Ride: Limestone Canyon/East Sinks

Enjoy the relaxation of riding in the wilderness on empty trails. Join us on this docent-led mountain bike ride through Limestone Canyon, part of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. We will visit the East Viewing Platform for a panoramic view of the geological feature call "The Sinks". The route to The Sinks will include a fun downhill ride on the Dripping Springs singletrack. The return route will take us on the Limestone Ridge singletrack with views of Limestone Canyon, Santiago Canyon and the Santa Ana Mountains.

This is a slow-paced ride designed for beginners that have experience riding fire roads such as Limestone Canyon or Telegraph Canyon but want to develop their climbing and riding abilities. The ride can also be enjoyed by more advanced riders looking for a relaxed ride in a beautiful setting.
