CANCELED: Hiking Through History

Celebrate 50 years of recreation at Santiago Oaks Regional Park by hiking through its history! Learn about the Windes family that called this park home, the flood of 1969 and the grassroots effort to preserve Barham Ranch as parkland. Stops will include the Historic and Villa Park dams, iconic orange grove, nature center and more.

The walk will begin in front of the nature center located near the park entrance and will be approximately 2 miles with little elevation gain.

Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is recommended. Learn more and register here.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the program and strollers are not recommended. Sun protection, sturdy footwear and plenty of water are strongly encouraged.

Become an OC Parks Jr. Ranger!

Explore the natural wonders of Peters Canyon Regional Park with OC Parks' new Jr. Ranger program! Participants will have the opportunity to earn a Jr. Ranger badge as we explore the various landscapes of Peters Canyon together.  

This program will begin outside of the park office near the flagpole.

The program content is geared toward ages 7 to 12, but all are welcome. 

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the program. Sunscreen, sturdy footwear and water are encouraged. 

The program is free and parking is $3 per vehicle.

Parks After Dark: Peters Canyon

We love the nightlife! Explore the landscape of Peters Canyon Regional Park as we set out to search for the nighttime critters that call the park home. From humble toads to graceful owls, you never know what you’ll see!

This program will meet in the parking lot at Peters Canyon Regional Park near the flagpole. Warm clothes, sturdy footwear and water are recommended. Red-tinted flashlights are highly encouraged. This hike is not recommended for very small children or strollers. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the program.

The program is free and parking is $3 per vehicle.

CANCELED: Restoration Day

*This program has been canceled due to park and trail closure.*

Lend a helping hand to improve native habitat at Peters Canyon Regional Park. Dedicate the morning to caring for restoration sites and help our native plants and shrubs thrive. Be prepared for weeding, watering, or planting as needed.

Strong gardening gloves, trail snacks, water, sun protection and wearing clothes you don’t mind getting dirty are highly recommended.

Program and parking are free. Parking passes will be made available to volunteers at check-in. The program will begin in the parking lot and will proceed to the restoration site. Be prepared to hike a moderate distance with tools.

Join an OC Parks resource specialist for a walk through Irvine Regional Park to look for the subtle signs that herald an Orange County winter.

This program will begin at parking lot G near the Children's Garden.

This is a slow-paced, 2-mile walk along Horseshoe Loop Trail with some elevation gain. Water, sturdy footwear and water are recommended. This hike is not recommended for very small children or strollers. Children must be accompanied by a guardian at all times during the program.

The program is free and parking is $5 per vehicle.

Orange County may not experience the same seasons as the rest of the country, but signs are there if you know where to look!

Join an OC Parks resource specialist for a walk through Peters Canyon to search for the subtle signs that herald an Orange County winter.

This program will begin in front of the Peters Canyon park office near the flagpole.  

This is a slow-paced, 2-mile walk along Peters Canyon Trail with frequent stops and little to no elevation gain. Water and comfortable attire with closed-toe shoes are recommended. This hike is not recommended for very small children or strollers. Children must be accompanied by a guardian at all times.

Toyon

Starry, Starry Night

Come join us for an interactive evening under the stars.  Immerse yourself in a scaled-down version of our solar system.  Test your imagination in naming the constellations.  Reenact the struggle between Orion and the Scorpion.  The hike will average 2-3 miles round trip at an easy pace with a high level of interpretation. This program is for participants who would like a slower-paced hike. Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes and bring water for the hike. This activity is designed with kids ages 5 – 12 in mind but, everyone is welcome.

Please note that you will be asked to adhere to the following measures in order to participate:

  • Be registered in advance, no walk-up registration is permitted.
  • Arrive with all necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail, including water, proper attire, and closed-toe footwear, first aid, health needs etc.
  • Restrooms will be available, but facilities will not be sanitized for each individual.
  • All participants are required to sign a liability waiver upon arrival at the staging area and before beginning the activity. The waiver can be previewed here: IRC Liability Waiver
  • You may be prevented from participating if you do not adhere to the above protocols.

Additionally, in an effort to respect and protect all employees, volunteers, and participants, please do not sign up or attend if you are not feeling well, exhibiting any symptoms of illness or have been in recent contact with someone who was ill.

Starry Starry night

Early Morning Hike: Weir Canyon

Join us on this early morning hike enjoying beautiful Weir Canyon Nature Preserve, part of OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space.  Starting in Irvine Regional Park, we pass through Lower and Upper Weir Canyon to a scenic overlook. We then head down Upper Blind Canyon as we wind our way back to our starting point.  This hike is around 9.5 miles with one significant climb and descent.

Please come prepared with a daypack, around 70 oz. (2 quarts) of water, trail snacks, closed-toe hiking shoes, sunscreen, first aid, and any other supplies needed to keep you safe on the trail. Each participant must carry his or her own pack and water and be comfortable hiking at an average moving pace of 3 mph. Under-prepared participants may be denied access to this program.

Moving with Nature in Mind - Twilight Yoga at the Farm

Join us at our beautiful Native Seed Farm for an all-levels Vinyasa yoga class. This one-hour outdoor yoga class will incorporate both static posture holds and a dynamic sequence of asanas, flowing from one pose to the next, while connecting breath with movement. The practice will include options for modifications, proper alignments and breathing techniques. Increase balance, flexibility, strength, and mental clarity while reducing tension and stress.

Please bring water, a yoga mat, a large towel (optional) to place under your mat, wear athletic clothing, and bring appropriate clothing layers and sun protection for the weather.

Please note that you will be asked to adhere to the following measures in order to participate:

Morning Yoga Hike in Baker Canyon

Evening Hike on Hicks Haul Road

Enjoy an evening hike through stunning rock formations and fragrant native plants as you listen to the sounds of nature. During this hike in the Irvine Open Space Preserve, you may travel at various hiking speeds based on your comfort level.  This out-and-back program travels 3.5 miles round trip up to scenic Loma Ridge and back down. Please bring a red-tinted flashlight as the return portion of the hike may be after sunset.
