Native Plant Nurseries Open House

Join OC Parks and Laguna Canyon Foundation for a special open house and get an exclusive look at two native plant nurseries dedicated to the restoration of the South Coast Wilderness. 

Explore OC Parks' nursery at the Willow Staging Area and Laguna Canyon Foundation's native plant nursery, create nature-inspired crafts and get expert tips on native plant gardening. You'll even have an opportunity to plant your own seeds to take home. 

This free, family-friendly open house is open to everyone. Advance registration required. Learn more and register here.

  • Laguna Canyon Foundation native plant nursery: Laguna Canyon Foundation Headquarters, 10 Phillips St., Laguna Beach, CA 92651. 

Parking is $3 per vehicle at the Willow Staging Area and free at Laguna Canyon Foundation Headquarters. Parking is limited and carpooling is encouraged.

Nature Creativity- Native Plant Tea

Nature can inspire the creativity in all of us. Learn how to identify native plants, what an invasive plant is and then make your own native plant tea to enjoy!

This program involves hiking about 1.5 miles on rocky terrain and is designed for ages 12 and older. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes, sun protection and bring water. 

Please note: This program involves making and drinking tea made from sustainably sourced native plants. If you have food allergies or sensitivities, please be sure to notify park staff upon arrival.

CANCELLED: Let's Go Hiking- Willow

*This program begins at the Willow Staging Area, 20070 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach, CA 92651*

Enjoy a 3.8-mile moderate hike with approximately 600 feet of elevation gain through Laurel and Willow Canyons led by Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteers. You will experience a variety of plant communities from coastal sage scrub to oak woodlands and enjoy an ocean view at the top.

Stories Carved in Stone

The rocks of Laguna Coast Wilderness Park tell a story that dates back millions of years. Join OC Parks and Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteers on a journey through history and discover volcanic intrusions, explore rock formations 40 million years old and experience the only naturally occurring lake in Orange County. 

This program includes a 3-mile hike. Please bring water, sun protection and wear closed-toe shoes. 

The program is for ages 12 and older. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

CANCELLED Little Explorers: Big and Small Creatures

How big does the world look to a tiny bug? How wide is a turkey vulture’s wing? Join OC Parks naturalists as we explore the amazing sizes in nature! We’ll read a story, take a short hike and finish with a fun craft. 

This program is designed for ages 3-6. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Please be aware this is a fitness hike and not for beginners; the pace is approximately a 19-minute mile. Raise your heart rate and your spirits on this strenuous, fast-paced, 5.5-mile hike over steep and uneven terrain with 750 feet of elevation gain. Please wear closed-toe shoes, sun protection and bring water.

Advance registration required.

Participants must be 16 or older. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian.

The program is free and parking is $3 per vehicle.

Fitness Hike - Nix, Little Sycamore

Nature Meditation Walk

Unplug and relax outdoors on a nature mediation walk through Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. 

Allow your natural sense of wonder to engage in playful activities, deepening connections with the outside world and ourselves during this guided program. 

The program will begin on the patio at the Nix Nature Center and include a brief walk and tea ceremony of reciprocity. Please note this activity involves making and drinking tea from sustainably sourced native plants and participants are asked to notify park staff upon arrival of any food allergies or sensitivities. Please wear closed-toe shoes, sun protection and bring water.

Five Senses Hike

Want to explore nature in a whole new way? Join OC Parks naturalists for a sensory adventure where we will listen, smell, touch and even taste as we make our way to beautiful Barbara’s Lake. This program is a fun, hands-on experience for the entire family!

Fitness Hike - Ridge Park

*This program begins at the Bommer Ridge Trail West Entrance, Ridge Park Road, Newport Beach, CA 92657*

Please be aware this is a fitness hike and not for beginners; the pace is approximately a 19-minute mile. Raise your heart rate and your spirits on this strenuous, fast-paced, 6.6-mile hike over steep and uneven terrain with 1,100 feet of elevation gain. Please wear closed-toe shoes, sun protection and bring water.

Participants must be 16 or older. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian.

The program and parking are free. Limited street parking is available nearby.

Fitness Hike- Ridge

Fishing Clinic

Join OC Parks for a fun morning of fishing at Mile Square Regional Park!

This clinic is designed to teach families how to fish responsibly with a chance to catch a few fish. Please meet at the south lake near the park ranger station and Euclid Street entrance. Whether this is your first time fishing or you’re a seasoned angler, this fun and hands-on educational program will have instructors available to demonstrate, assist and answer any questions. No experience is necessary!  

All needed equipment and bait will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own. Participants 16 and older planning to fish must have a California state fishing license. Fishing licenses can be purchased online here. All California Department of Fish and Wildlife rules and regulations apply.  

Participants will learn how to catch and release fish, but you may bring your own cooler to take your catches home, if you choose. Please note there is a five-fish limit on trout.
