Create in the Park: Get Out and Sketch!

Join OC Parks at George Key Ranch Historic Park for Create in the Park! Professional artist, Dori Dewberry, will guide you through the basics of sketching in plein air. Artists of all levels are welcome to explore and sketch the tranquil gardens, citrus grove, farm equipment and historic home. A guided tour about the history of George Key Ranch will also be included.

This program is designed for ages 12 and older. Materials are not provided, only art instruction. A list of recommended materials will be made available to all registered participants in advance of the program. Sun protection, water and snacks are recommended.

Create in the Park: Start Creating Outside

Join OC Parks at George Key Ranch Historic Park for Create in the Park! Professional artist, Dawn Buckingham, will guide you through the basics of plein air painting and provide tips on selecting and packing art supplies. The program includes a demonstration of sketching plans for your painting as well as creating your own sketch in pencil, ink, marker or paint. A guided tour about the history of George Key Ranch will also be included.

Join OC Parks at Arden: Helena Modjeska Historic House and Gardens for Create in the Park! Professional artist, Dawn Buckingham, will provide instruction and tips for capturing trees, foliage and gardens in your art. Artists of all levels are welcome to enjoy the tranquil grounds and draw inspiration from the historic structures, water features and gardens. Learn the basics of botanical drawing as a foundation of your art. A guided tour about the history of Arden and Helena Modjeska’s artist life will also be included.

Embark on a journey through the stars at our Space Ranger Program and Starr Party! The Space Ranger Program begins one hour before sundown and features interactive activities and a short talk, perfect for families and space enthusiasts of all ages. 

Once the sun sets, join us outdoors for the Starr Party, where telescopes and expert guidance will help you explore the night sky until approximately 9 p.m. Visitors may attend one or both activities. No equipment needed, just your curiosity!

This is a family-friendly program recommended for children ages 5 and older. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All activities will take place at the nature center. 

Parking is $5 per vehicle. Advance registration is required for those without a camping reservation. Learn more and register here.

Rain or inclement weather may cancel this program. Participants may call (949) 923-2210 to confirm we’re clear for takeoff!

Tucked away amidst a live oak grove on the banks of Santiago Creek lies the century-old home of one of the most famous Shakespearean actresses of the late Victorian era - Madame Helena Modjeska. Designed in 1888 by renowned New York architect Stanford White, it’s one of two National Historic Landmarks in Orange County. 

Enjoy Shakespearean performances, live music and docent-led tours of the iconic home and grounds. You can even taste one of the famous caramel and marshmallow Modjeska candies! 

This event is free with free parking, but reservations are required due to limited parking on-site. Click here to register for the 2 to 4 p.m. time slot
