"All the World's a Stage" opens Aug. 7 at the Old Courthouse Museum
by Marisa ONeil, Public Affairs Specialist on 7/31/2008
The Old Courthouse Museum in downtown Santa Ana will present “All the World’s a Stage: Modjeska’s Arden,” an exhibition on the famous 19th century actress Madame Helena Modjeska and her legendary estate in the Santa Ana Mountains. The exhibition opens on Thursday, August 7, 2008 and remains on display until late January 2009.
Madame Helena Modjeska, one of the best-known actresses in the United States during the last quarter of the 19th century, established a country home in the Santa Ana Mountains in the early 1880s. Though the property was a working ranch, Modjeska relished her mountain home as a sort of wilderness and sought renewal there between busy theatrical tours.
As she transformed the property, Modjeska hired a prestigious New York architect to design her home there and developed the grounds into lush gardens. Arden, as she named the ranch, became one of the best-known homes in California.
The exhibition includes artifacts, photographs and other images associated with Modjeska’s stage career, as well as the history of the Arden estate. Playbills, paintings and personal effects provide insight into the professional and personal dimensions of Modjeska’s life.
The public is invited to attend an opening reception on August 7, 2008 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Old Courthouse. For further information related to these events, please call the museum’s special event and education office at (714) 973-6610.
