The final draft of the park's General Development Plan Update will next go to the OC Parks Commission.

by Marisa O'Neil, Public Affairs Specialist on 6/25/2008

The Santiago Oaks Regional Park final General Development Plan Update II, posted below, will next go to approval by the OC Parks Commission. The plan includes a listing of authorized trails within the park.

This document is in final draft form, pending approval by the County of Orange Board of Supervisors.

E-mail comments can be sent to SORPtrails@rdmd.ocgov.com through Friday, July 11, 2008. An updated trails map is currently being produced and will be available at the meeting.

The General Development Update comes following OC Parks staff review of a trails assessment report, as well as public input about Santiago Oaks Regional Park and its trails.

Santiago Oaks Regional Park lost 90% of its habitat in the Windy Ridge Fire of March 2007. While such a loss presented immense challenges for OC Parks, it also presented an opportunity to assess the park’s trail system.

The recent acquisitions of the proposed Weir Canyon Park and Barham Ranch parcels also heightened the need to evaluate trails that were not officially designated and adopted into the Park’s existing system.

Jim Meyers, Executive Director of Trails 4 All, offered to partner with Orange County Parks in providing co-funding for BellFree Contractors, Inc. to perform a complete assessment of all the trails in Santiago Oaks. The scope of the project focused on recommending what improvements were needed to make the trails sustainable and safe for continued recreation and enjoyment for all types of trail users.

OC Parks carefully took the BellFree report, as well as public comment, into consideration in its draft operations plan. Parks staff also held additional meetings with stakeholder groups to gather further input.
